Petrolia - Canada's Victorian Oil Town

ask not what history can do for you,  ask what you can do for history.....

Welcome to the Petrolia Heritage Web site

For hundreds of years the natives had scooped up oil from the swampy forests of Enniskillen Township. Finally in the late ca.1850s men from the Central USA found this oil and dug down to capture it. It was used for lubricants and later found to be a smokeless alternative to whale oil in lamps. This website is dedicated to these men and the industry that they built. Please enjoy the pictures of these men and what they left to history.

Many a community has lamented the loss of a much loved landmark. I know of none however that have ever regretted saving a beautiful historic building or place.
