LCCVI 125th anniversary a community celebration

By Petrolia Topic Staff

The 125th anniversary of Lambton Central Collegiate and Vocational Institute (formerly Petrolia District High School) will be celebrated with a weekend of events May 15-17, 2009 and it’s going to be a community celebration.

Anniversary events will include a meet and greet, golf tournament, LCCVI memorabilia rooms, a dinner and dance, and a inter-denominational church service.

A committee headed by Marilyn Armstrong (nee McEwen) is organizing celebration events and tickets can be purchased (money order or cheques only) through the mail: LCCVI 125th anniversary, P.O. Box 250, Petrolia, Ont., N0N 1R0; in Petrolia at 21 Shell, and P-Town Tech; in Alvinston at Three Maples Variety Store; in Wyoming at Grammies Pizza; and in Brigden at the Shell gas station.

Helping the committee and working as volunteers at the events will be members with the Petrolia and North Enniskillen Fire Department, the Wyoming Fire Department, local and area service clubs and the Petrolia and Enniskillen Agricultural Society.

All events are open to the public.

LCCVI began as Petrolia District High School in 1884 and is rich in pride and tradition. Armstrong said the organizing committee is hoping for a community at large celebration.

Howard McLean is preparing a slide show and LCCVI teacher Shannon Inglis is setting up the decades memorabilia rooms. If anyone has memorabilia for the decades rooms, they can contact Inglis at 519-882-1910.

The tentative reunion schedule — posted at the LCCVI Web site ( http://lccvi.lkdsb.net/ ) via the “LCCVI 125th Reunion Schedule” link — follows:

FRIDAY, MAY 15: Meet and greet at the Petrolia Lions hall at Greenwood Park, at 8 p.m.

SATURDAY, MAY 16: Golf tournament starting in the morning at Heritage Heights Golf Course in Petrolia; tours of memorabilia rooms at LCCVI; reunion of Nicol Scholars on May 16 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at LCCVI; family dinner at the Greenwood Palace in Greenwood Park; followed by an evening dance with entertainment by Graham Pickett’s “One-Eyed Blind Band” at the Greenwood Recreation Centre. The band plays country, blues and jazz music.

SUNDAY, MAY 17: Breakfast from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion’s Petrolia branch hall; and a inter-denominational service at Bradshaw Hall at LCCVI.

Also being considered are five- and 10-kilometre road races.

Any proceeds from the celebration will help establish a heritage room at LCCVI or be used to school activities.

To book a place in the golf tournament, call Rick Tremblay at 519-882-1910. Tickets to the meet and greet and other anniversary celebration events are available at the above listed ticket depots. For more general information, call Marilyn Armstrong at 519-845-1579; e-mail her at:  LCCVI125anniversary@gmail.com or visit: http://lccvi.lkdsb.net/

Various views of LCCVI over the last 125 years

Here is a print that Dick& Janet Bradley brought over for me to copy. It is way too big even for my extra large scanner so I grabbed a series of quick digital pics through the glass and it turned out not bad. Apparently this hung on the wall at LCCVI for many years and Janet would like to know more about it.

Here is the back of the print with some details.

All of these pics and more are from my own collection because people like you let me copy them. I want more.
