Baptist Church
The Baptists

The Baptists, as a distinct denomination, originated in England in the
17th century, during a time of intense religious reform. These early
Baptists were divided into two camps: General Baptists who were Arminian
in their theology (i.e. salvation is man's free choice), and Particular
Baptists who were Calvinistic in their theology (i.e. salvation is God's
sovereign choice).
What about England?

The English

In the 5th century the Roman legions left Britannia, leaving the Brits
to defend themselves against the wild Scots and Picts who began
harassing them at will along their northern border i.e. Hadrian’s Wall.
The British king (Vortigern) was in a dilemma. So he sent an invitation
across the sea to some Germanic chieftains to come and help the Brits
against their foes. Big mistake. As soon as the Angles, Saxons and Jutes
quelled the threat from the north they turned their attention to the
Brits who had called them for aid! The Brits fled to the west – they are
still there to this day (the Welsh) – and the Angles and their cousins
settled in the land, renaming it Angle-land.
